Torness nuclear power station in East Lothian, Thornton Colliery in Fife and a distillery in Edinburgh should all be given listed status, according to leading architects. A crumbling collection of barracks is also among the suggested candidates for protection as some of the most important examples of 20th-century design, according to members of the Royal Incorporation of Architects Scotland (RIAS). Now the North British Distillery Company site in Gorgie, the power station and the colliery are to be considered by Historic Scotland, which awards special protection to buildings of particular architectural or historical merit.
