Art of glass

The Scotsman

The garden of a traditional Victorian house in Edinburgh is not the most obvious setting for Scotland's largest glass sculpture, but that is exactly what award-winning architect and hotelier Andrew Doolan has done in the city's sedate Grange district. "Of course, it's actually a big greenhouse - albeit a very modern interpretation," says Glasgow-born Doolan as we stand outside the solid house in Dick Place. Beside us is a tranquil pond, in which his 'sculpture' is mirrored, creating the illusion that this, the tallest glass wall in Scotland, is double its actual height. We are here in the gloaming, the better to see Doolan's stunning architecture lit up against the twilight sky.
