Edinburgh's striking Victorian tenements have inspired countless flathunters to invest their money in a home steeped in history. The buildings' collective beauty has earned the Capital the name sandstone city, attracting hordes of people to Edinburgh to see "the best sandstone in the world". But there is one historical feature of some of the impressive tenements which is making an unwelcome, unexpected and un-budgeted-for appearance. An estimated one in ten of the popular buildings is now crumbling away because, instead of being built from Scotland's finest sandstone, they were actually built from poorer quality sandstone, the inferiority of which has only now been revealed after a century of erosion.
