Waverley redevelopment is too important to be stuck in a siding

The Scotsman

The taxi driver's tale about the American tourist commenting on how wonderful it was that Edinburgh Castle had been built so close to the railway station is more than just a whimsical comment on welcome American visitors. It's also confirmation of how centre-stage Waverley is in our World Heritage City. The station is more than just a major gateway for travellers to Scotland. It's as much part of the landscape as it is a point of arrival. What happens in the station's redevelopment is therefore of critical importance in more ways than simply rail access. Moreover, as the main station in the capital city, it's a national as well as local issue. Not only is it the main station for many arriving in Scotland but the fulcrum on which many rail journeys pivot.
