About-turn over 'concrete carbuncle'

Edinburgh Evening News

For more than 30 years it has stood as an unloved concrete carbuncle in the eyes of most of the passing public. Small wonder, then, that few appeared to grieve when Renfrewshire Council recently decided on a radical upgrade to the sprawling Paisley Civic Centre, which houses its headquarters. Parts of the fabric and fittings of the building were said to be so decrepit that it would be wholly useless within 10 to 15 years. The council's solution was to demolish the centre's northern half and sell the cleared site to developers, helping to offset part of the £13.5m upgrade costs.
