St Andrew's House was considered too 'fascist'

The Scotsman

Donald Dewar was opposed to the idea of turning St Andrew's House into the Scottish Parliament because he thought the massive concrete edifice on Regent Road was "somewhat fascist", the Fraser Inquiry heard yesterday. The then Scottish secretary had also taken a dislike to the then Scottish Office building during the days when he was in the opposition and he had to go there on a Monday morning to meet Tory ministers. He particularly remembered the feeling of dread, climbing the steps from Waverley station to have meetings with Michael Forsyth, the former Conservative Scottish secretary.
