Welcometo Haymarket. Gateway to Scotland's capital. As you step off the train, take some time to wander along the pristine streets, perhaps stopping off to visit the shops, have a coffee or take in a film in the modern arcade and cinema complex. Then when you leave, take your choice of trams, buses and taxis, or just walk on into the centre of Edinburgh itself. That is the city council's vision of the future of Haymarket. But this week, hopes of turning that vision into reality any time soon faltered as councillors rejected plans by council-owned firm EDI to convert the old Morrison Street goods yard in Haymarket into a glass-fronted shopping centre and office block.
