A building is never going to be the cure for cancer – even one as calming, shimmering and inspired as Frank Gehry's Maggie's Centre. Its beech fittings and hull-vaulted ceilings are never going to stem the savage mitotic takeover of cells dividing out of control. The light from its wide windows won't sear away a tumour. Nor will its jetty take you to the good ship health. But, a building can help. It can be a salve, a door to the cure, a place of rest, most important of all a nexus for information, for finding out about possible cures.
